American Idol is in full swing, the auditions are well under way, the wannabes are being weeded out and the real talent is being kept in… and the Paula Goodspeed story isn’t exactly over yet. Yeah, there’s been quite a lot of talk after she was found dead in front of Idol judge Paula Abdul’s house, and all the talk about whether the show’s producers could have done something to prevent a superfan—my euphemism for “stalker”, but it’s up to you—to do this much.

Then again, it seems pretty obvious that she committed suicide. Goodspeed was panned during her audition on the show’s fifth season, which was probably a blow to her as she wouldn’t have a chance to be close to Paula, being obsessed and all. Painting huge murals of the singer-turned-reality star wasn’t enough, so she eventually ended it all—or so it seemed to be.

The investigation into Goodspeed’s death took a turn today, after authorities confirmed that she died due to an overdose of prescription drugs. Ed Winter, assistant chief of coroner in Los Angeles, confirmed the finding, but would not specify which drugs were responsible. They’re not also confirming that it’s a suicide with this finding, though. Authorities are still waiting for the results of another toxicology test, to confirm whether it really is a case of one intentionally taking her life, or a medicine pop gone horribly wrong. Also, investigators did not find a note from Goodspeed.

Well, this story doesn’t seem to be going the way of the forgotten footnote yet. Perhaps we’ll only be able to put this story to rest when more details are revealed. As for Paula, well, all seems to be well after her remarks blaming producers for letting Goodspeed into Idol despite knowing about her obsession, supposedly. The show’s going along, the auditions seem to be going well (and it’s prerecorded, yes) and there’s no case yet of a contestant who’s actually a superfan of one of the judges. I hope there isn’t any.
